The King died without a son. Of his four wives, only Isabel of Portugal and María Cristina of the Two-Sicilies had children, all daughters. María Isabel’s only daughter died when she was four months old, María Cristina’s eldest daughter, Isabel, was sworn in as Crown Princess and became Spain’s child-Queen at the death of her father in 1933. The new Queen was almost 3 years old.
